Art is Fun

This is a directed drawing course where each week a new drawing will be presented. For my drawing courses I teach with a ‘Show, Tell, Demonstrate” approach. First showing the students what I’d like them to do on a slide, I then tell them what to draw and where, and finally I demonstrate it on my own drawing. This allows students to “keep up” and not feel behind as they have the information coming to them 3 ways. It also allows for multiple learning styles to be successful. I choose drawings that all levels of artists can confidently complete and encourage creative liberties. For example, last week we drew a birdhouse and a bird, students were encouraged to think about where their birdhouse was, if it had a theme, and how they would represent that. I had themes/settings from outer space to the farm, mountain landscapes to desert cactuses. Inspiring creativity not only creates confidence that their ideas are worthy, but it also helps them see value in others’ ideas. Often taking those inspirations into the next drawing we create.

Girls Just Want to Have Fun &

Little Girls Want to Have Fun Too

Our projects and class description are exactly the same Art is Fun (see previous page) just in an all-girls format. The goal of this club is to create that safe space for girls to express themselves and create lifelong friendships all while they are creating art. Some weeks I will offer examples of how to add journaling into their art, introducing them to the concept of art journaling slowly over time. These journaling additions are a great way to add thought processing and reflection in a time where our kids need an outlet more than ever. Little Girls Want to Have Fun Too was created out of the desire for those little sisters wanting to have the same girls time as their older siblings. It is geared towards girls 5-7 years old, has a smaller class size and our projects are simplified but along the same theme as the older girls' class. This helps eliminate the ability for those younger girls to try to compare their project to the older girls as they are apples to oranges.

Mimic the Masters

Each week we will gather to learn about a new artist while completing a drawing/art project. This is part social, part project based, and all fun! We will look at the art and techniques of a few famous artists and create our own masterpiece by mimicking their techniques. Students are encouraged to take their own creative liberties making their art their very own. I am not a “this must go here” and “that must be yellow” type of art teacher. Lessons for this course are denoted in the catalog by the artists last name with the word Inspired following. Such as Blair Inspired Castle where we'll learn about Mary Blair and create our own castle in her style.

Animal Art Exploration

Each week we will gather and learn a little about our animal of the week all while completing a drawing/art project. I try to share the weird and wacky animal facts that are often overlooked as well as some basic information. This is part science, part project based, and all fun! Students are encouraged to take their own creative liberties making their art their very own. I am not a “this must go here” and “that must be yellow” type of art teacher. I love rainbow animals or cats with two tails, especially when there is a story behind it. Asking students to tell us about their drawing helps us know the whole story and learn their inspiration behind it. Lessons for this course are denoted in the catalog with an AA after the animal's name, such as Beavers AA.
